[ Homework Help ] Open Question : What would have happened in a court case such as the one in this novel if it had come about in today's society?

Okay, so I have been reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" this summer and i was curious, what would have happened in a court case such as the one is this novel if it had come about in today's society? What would happen if the character were tried in today's judicial system . Why did it happen the way it did in the novel? Please answer in 2 paragraphs or less. Thanks :)
